NYX Smokey Look Kit (S109)

This tiny black palette, just under 2.5 inches square and 1 inch deep, has a lower drawer that slides out with two lipgloss selections and an upper tray of nine eyeshadow colors with a mirror in the lid. Its very handy for having a selection of eye colors when trying to travel light. NYX also offers two other palettes of this size, one with a selection of brown tone colors and one with cool colors – including purple. I selected this one because I liked the range of grayish/neutral shades. The case also includes two applicators, one for the eyeshadows and one for the lip colors.

I prefer to use NYX colors with a lid primer, which seems to work well for all day wear. Unfortunately NYX does not select color names for the trays in this palette, so I’ll do my best to describe them – note they all have a bit of shimmer. Top row – pale peachy pink, medium taupe, grey-ish medium brown; Middle row – charcoal, medium cool grey, pale warm grey; Bottom row – white pearl, warm black, cool light grey. I like the range of light and dark colors and the variety in the same basic tone. Also, very good that they included at least one color that could double as a liner and one for highlighting. I’ve been able to create a variety of smokey and smokey-lite looks with these, using my own makeup brushes. The lip glosses are not a big deal to me – very sheer, but nice to have as an option if all you’ve brought is the kit.
